It is more than evident that leaders, who have the label of managers, are made of very special stuff. They are in charge of teams of people of often absolutely colossal size and must contend with the (fierce and implacable) bull of effectiveness. The problem? That in their valiant search for efficiency bosses gamble everything on the numbers card and leave people completely in the background. What would have happened if one of the most pedigree leaders that history has given us, the good Moses, had descended from Mount Sinai armed with a handful of Excel spreadsheets and not his famous tables of the law? It is more than evident that the future of history would probably have been very different (in a bad sense). A good part of bosses like to pay tribute to figures and spreadsheets and they forget that the people in their charge actually function much better when they are fed using passion as fuel (and not so much the control emanating from hard and fast numbers). This is the thesis that Mark Dopheide maintains in the book Gott ist ein Kreativer, kein Kontroller (God is creative, not a controller) , recently published by the German publisher Econ. Gott ist a Kreativer, no Controller From Dopheide's point of view, managers would do well to turn away from the god of control to embrace the faith of creativity. And for this they would do well to uphold the commandments that we break down below.
You will understand numbers and love people Bosses often prostrate themselves at the foot of the triangle formed by growth, increased efficiency and profits. They forget, however, that this triangle inevitably falls into disrepair if the variable Phone Number List of people (which is the one that has the most weight in achieving success) is left out. 2. You will not let the experience blind you The experiences that bosses accumulate over the years are not necessarily telephoto lenses that help them when it comes to venturing into what is on the horizon. Such experiences are often a double-edged sword and can end up turning into blinders. 3. You will love the illogical as much as the logical Invariably letting yourself be guided by logic does not really make any sense. Doing so involves acting like a navigation system that always follows the same route. Sometimes to move forward and not stay stagnant it is advisable to take refuge in the arms of the illogical. 4. You will not confuse the optimal with the maximum Unlike Mother Nature, “homo optimus” is governed by a totally artificial monoculture in which efficiency (and only efficiency) unquestionably rules the roost. Those who confuse the optimal with the maximum are doomed to drown in the universal flood.
You will celebrate and support what is different Managers like to surround themselves with clones of their own minds. However, the truth is that diversity definitely makes uniformity bite the dust. After all, great minds don't all think the same. 6. You will free your thinking from the semicolon Communication is an absolutely essential tool for managers and should not be something they feel obligated to do because they are supposedly at the expense of multiple risks. A good manager must advocate fluid and unrestricted communication with his followers. 7. You will have visions Technological possibilities have increased the power of the imagination of flesh-and-blood humans to infinity and beyond. Those who invest in the power of imagination (human and non-human) will hold the reins of the future. 8. You will be a creator, not an "outsourcer" The orientation towards pure and simple profit only leads to one thing: famine internally. That is why good leaders are guided by creativity in everything they do and strive to bring something new and truly valuable to the world. 9. You will give meaning to everyday life The two most important days of our lives are the day we are born the day we discover why we have really come into the world. Companies and people who have discovered their respective goals in life grow together and feed each other. 10. You will be a person People trust people, not emails, business cards and titles. All the more reason for bosses to be visible and accessible. Trust ultimately turns into a certain sense of intimacy.
